How to Girl: Skin Routines 101

If there's one thing I learned a little too late, it was the importance of having a skin routine! Up until last year, I did not have any sort of skin routine and my gosh do I regret it.

Why do we need a skin care routine? Simply put, its self-care. It stops your skin from getting unruly and keeps your skin in its best form for as long as possible. Our skin is subject to enough damage without us making it worse by not caring for it.

A basic skin care routine should go like this:
Everyday routine (AM & PM)
Cleanse

Tone
Eye serum
Moisturiser (with Spf preferably) OR a Serum/Oil/night cream for PM

Twice a week
Cleanse

Exfoliate
Mask
Tone
Eye serum
Moisturise

Having a specialized facial tailored to your skin every 6-8 weeks is favorable, however, I know that's not always affordable and it isn't essential. For those that do like to invest in their skin and have the luxury to do this, definitely, do!

The order is important, ensure you stick to it! It is recommended that your skin care regime consists of one brand only. This is because all their products are compatible with each other, whereas mixing products from different brands can be harsh on your skin and even cause adverse reactions such as allergies and breakouts. It's also important for you to know your skin type, Ie are you oily, dry, combination? whatever your type, be sure to get products that are tailored to your skin.

I personally suffer from eczema, meaning my skin is prone to being dry. I like to use natural, vegan/ cruelty-free brands if I can, and at current, I am using Sukin! I absolutely adore their products and they're super affordable! I did use to use Clarins, however, it was so expensive and they also test on animals, so I made the switch to Sukin and I'm happy with the results!

A good skin routine can make the difference between being happy and confident in your skin and not, especially if you're acne/pimple prone. If you're not sure what type skin you have, or where to start, I'd recommend going to a beauty clinic and having a facial/getting your skin assessed and getting a tailored skin routine with specific products for you. This is what I did and it really helped. Skincare routines can be daunting, especially with the number of products on the market, but speaking to someone who tailored my first routine made it easy for me to understand how it works and what my skin needs.
